Melodic Revolution Records plans on releasing a concept compilation CD tentatively titled “A Cry For Help” an album that will focus on and help bring attention to the atrocities of Darfour. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to this cause but it’s not as much about the money as it’s about bringing awareness to and hopefully being just one proponent in helping make a change in Darfour
We all know what a powerful impact music is and has been to help bring awareness and sometimes…

Week of August 31, 2009
After a quiet weekend of settling into my new home, the first day of school arrived. At least it was the first day of school for everyone else -
I got a field trip to the hospital for medical examinations instead. Because I'm legally an adult I had to go along with the foreign teachers to get a clean bill of health. Everyone got an x-ray, blood test, heart checkup,
ultrasound (yes, even the men), and eye exam, among other misc.…

Last night I attended the Music For Relief Holiday Mixer at the Doheny in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday December 17th. Guests entered the private bar through an unmarked cabana in a very discrete garage entrance off of Olympic Blvd, a stone’s throw away from LA Live. I arrived early, to help set up and volunteer at the registration table. From my vantage point, I greeted guests as they streamed in through the lengthy hallway from the cabana entrance, meanwhile surveying the scene around the…

After 13 hours our train finally arrived at Nanjing's railway station, and we joined the many other passengers shuffling out onto the platform. Everyone looked a little rumpled from our night spent on the train, but there was a certain air of excited energy that seemed to hang around us. We all knew that this was it - we were really starting now. We followed our chaperone through the station until we reached the designated spot where our families were waiting.…

Music For Relief would like to thank everyone who came out to Stetson Ranch Park in Sylmar to take part in our December Tree Care event, in partnership with TreePeople. On Tuesday, we weeded and mulched the hillside – previously devastated by wildfire – where the 30 trees planted back in October currently reside. The trees did not need to be watered due to the previous day’s heavy rains so we were able to concentrate on the important work of keeping hillside clear of invasive species and…

We boarded our train bound for Nanjing in the afternoon of August 27th, and would arrive around 8am of the next day. We all had fun settling into our sleeper-car, deciding who would take top, middle, bottom. I ended up in the middle, with Jenna in the bunk above me and our chaperone in the one below. For a while after the train started, we all enjoyed the novelty of climbing around on each others' bunks and chatting, discussing everything from what we…

For those of you rolling your eyes at the horrible alliteration, I apologize - I couldn't resist.
Anyways.
August 24 - 27, 2009
The group of students bound for Nanjing was a pretty diverse one. There were five Americans including myself (all of whom were NSLI year students), two Germans, two Italians, one Costa Rican (who was really Canadian...), one Spaniard, one French, and one Thai. Any group of AFSers could've been held back in Beijing (it was all about the…

After a tedius morning of crash course basics such as, "你好," "我叫...," "我是美国人," "多少钱?" and how to count, we took a day trip to visit the Great Wall.

It was a really cool experience being there. Ben and I kept giving each other reality checks, saying stuff like, "Hey, guess what? We're on the Great Wall." It was such a strange, awesome feeling. After reading about it, seeing pictures of it, and just…

I forgot to mention it before, but starting as soon as we signed in at orientation we had our temperatures taken almost constantly. They had this little machine that resembled a toy alien gun that they would point at our foreheads (without touching us) and make sure no one had an abnormally high temp. I realize it was a smart precaution and all, but it was still rather amusing to have that thing pointed at one's forehead so seriously. Fun stuff.
Anyways,…
