Monsoon rains have caused the worst flooding in Pakistan in living memory. 20 million people including 9 million children have been affected. That's more people affected than in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined.
One-fifth of the country is underwater, covering over 3.2 million hectares, roughly the area of Italy! The water has damaged 14% of Pakistan's cultivated land.

In a 36-hour period, the government reported that 3 feet of rain had fallen, with some areas reporting flooding up to 18 feet. The heavy rain has destroyed infrastructure and homes, and the death toll is expected to increase because many affected villages are in remote, nearly inaccessible areas. With more rain expected, some relief efforts have been suspended due to the bad weather.

As the floods continue, relief workers are increasingly worried about the availability of food and especially clean drinking water, due to fears of water-borne diseases such as cholera.
