Lucy Shillingi, Director of Pathfinder International, the leading a program to improve population and environmental conditions on the islands of Lake Victoria, could not be happier with the positive effects of having a WE CARE Solar Suitcase installed at the clinic on Bussi Island. Christine Wanyana, the midwife at the clinic is also thrilled with the new light the solar energy system provides.
The immediate impact of the solar suitcase at a medical clinic on the island was outstanding. The access to electricity that each solar suitcase provides is not just a luxury, it’s a life saving necessity.
One of the largest benefits seen to date include the town clinic being able to stay open past 4pm to provide services such as emergency care and child birth. The clinic takes full advantage of their new access to electricity and will reopen it’s doors in all hours of the night to help those in need. This has become such a vital service that word has spread to other local islands, who’s residents now travel to seek medical assistance on Bussi Island.
Nurses now have enough light from the solar suitcase to not need to use kerosene lamps at night, which filled the rooms with toxic air, leaving the patients, including newborns with more ailments.
Moreover, money saved on expensive kerosene can now be spent on things that will help stop spreading of disease, and other medical equipment.
"We have the sun throughout the day and we have light in the night. This money is now saved to cater for other things such as buying gloves whenever there is a shortage.” Adds Lucy.
Another heartwarming benefit to having access to electricity is the ability for mothers to hear their unborn baby’s heartbeat with the use of a fetal doppler. This is a luxury that many parents have taken advantage of, and could be considered priceless.
The most remarkable part of all of this is that we are not talking about an army of people making a difference. All of the benefits, and all of the lives saved came from ONE solar suitcase. Imagine how much good could come from getting these Solar Suitcases in the hands of those who need it. All that it takes is a few dollars to help, so please, think about the last time that you stubbed your toe in the dark, now imagine being operated in it.
