What we know at this point and why humanitarian aid will be needed for many years to come:
- On January 12th, a series of earthquakes ranging from magnitude 6.5-7.3 struck Haiti in the highly populated area of Department Ouest, 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, claiming the lives of an estimated 212,000 people.
- An estimated 300,000 people were injured during the earthquakes
- 1.2 million are confirmed homeless in the aftermath of the disaster
- As of January 26th, there had been 56 aftershocks of 4.5 magnitude or higher
- An estimated one million children are unaccompanied, orphaned or have lost one parent
- The AP estimates that 90% of structures in towns near the epicenter were destroyed; 70% were destroyed "in broad areas of the capital"
- The Haitian Prime Minister expects the reconstruction of Port Au Prince to last at least 10 years
