On Thursday, tropical storm Tomas drenched crowded camps in Haiti's capitol, Port-au-Prince, where 1.3 million earthquake survivors are still living in temporary tent and tarpaulin shelters
. Some earthquake survivors were able to evacuate to schools or more secure government shelters as the hurricane passed, but only a small number. Early reports indicate no serious storm destruction or major casualties, however the
heavy rainfall will
likely worsen the cholera epidemic which has already killed 442
people and sickened more than 6,700.In response, the UN and relief agencies have maximized their alert systems in preparation for another humanitarian emergency.
