Typhoon Washi has caused a national calamity in the Philippines, as flash floods and mudslides over the weekend killed nearly 1,000 people in the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.
The national disaster agency said more than 338,000 people were affected by the disaster, and nearly 43,000 people remain displaced in schools, churches, and gymnasiums. Many schools, bridges, and roads were badly damaged, as well as over 10,000 houses.
Evacuation centers in both Iligan and Cagayan de Oro struggle to prevent the spread of diseases. The United Nations World Food Programme is providing needed food aid and other supplies to these centers.
Our thoughts go to those affected by the Typhoon. Check back here for more updates.
